Haymarket Cross

Ian Harper's 1960's North Eastern area locomotive shed layout.

phone 07966 230271

An historically accurate 00 model railway layout portraying a busy East Coast main line steam shed circa 1961/2. The layout shows how locos were prepared for their return journeys: coaling; watering; and where necessary, turning, before returning to the station to couple up to their trains. A lucky few even got a clean!

The constant activity makes you sympathise with the shed foreman as he struggles to dispatch engines on time.

The layout demonstrates the advantages of DCC. Dozens of locos moving throughout the shed area; ask to hear a magnificent A4 chime whistle or perhaps you prefer an A3. Have you a favourite loco from this era? Ask Ian, he probably has it!

The layout is Digitrax controlled, (supported by some CML components), and features an unusual use of a Fleischmann turntable in the fiddle yard!

Haymarket Cross is modelled in OO gauge, having an 8m x 2.2m operating area footprint.  2 x 13amp sockets are required within 2 metres of the layout.  For exhibition purposes, this layout requires a minimum of 4 operators but works best, as far as visitors are concerned, with 6.  This enables our operators to answer the flood of questions we are continually asked at shows, without disrupting the all-important movement of the locos.

This layout is transported in a van and is accompanied by 1 car.

As members of a model railway club, we realise the importance of keeping exhibition costs to a minimum.  We have found that we can transport two layouts to a show for the same price as only one.  Please contact our Secretary for more details.
